Protection and Recovery for Managed Websites

Security and Backups

Website security and backups work together within Devonto's managed hosting arrangements, combining protective measures with a separate resource for recovering website data.

No website can be made immune from every problem. Devonto uses practical protective measures appropriate to the hosting setup and maintains off-site backups so prevention and recovery are treated as different, necessary parts of managing the website.

Understand the Different Roles

Website Security and Backups Have Different Jobs

Security measures aim to reduce and detect threats. Backups provide a separate recovery resource when data or a working version of the website is needed. Both depend on suitable management and neither should be presented as a guarantee that disruption cannot occur.

The arrangements described here apply to websites hosted through Devonto's managed service. A website hosted elsewhere may have different arrangements.

It helps to separate a working website from the copies kept for recovery. A backup provides a version from an earlier point in time, so its usefulness depends on when it was taken and what needs to be recovered. Keeping backups off site also separates that resource from the website's immediate hosting environment.

Retention gives a window of earlier versions to work from. The managed arrangements described here provide at least 14 days, with longer retention on Devonto's own infrastructure. If you need to understand the arrangement for a particular website, we can explain the applicable service rather than assuming every hosting environment is identical.

Restoration testing addresses a different question from simply checking that a backup job ran. It helps establish whether the available process can recover a copy. The quarterly testing described below forms part of that approach, without turning the existence of a backup into a promise about the outcome of every incident.

Security

Protective Measures

We use protective measures suited to the hosting setup to help identify and reduce malicious activity.
Backup

Nightly Off-Site Backups

We take nightly backups and store them off site. We retain them for at least 14 days across these managed hosting arrangements, with longer retention on Devonto's own hosting infrastructure.
Backup Restore

Quarterly Restoration Testing

Devonto carries out restoration testing quarterly to check that backups can be recovered. This tests the backup arrangements and does not mean that every individual website is restored each quarter or that a fixed recovery time is guaranteed.

Get Help with Website Security and Backups

Start with someone who knows the website and its hosting arrangement.

Existing customers can contact Devonto if something appears wrong or they have a question about the managed website. We can then consider the situation in the context of the actual service and setup.

When reporting a problem, describe what you noticed and when it first appeared. An affected page address and an explanation of any recent changes can help establish what needs attention. You do not need to diagnose whether the cause is hosting, the website or a separate service before getting in touch.

The next action depends on the situation. It may involve understanding a changed setting, investigating suspicious behaviour or considering an earlier copy of relevant data. Recovery decisions need to account for the current website as well as the backup, particularly where information has changed since that copy was made.
